Self-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, yet so many footballer’s struggle to find it. Unfortunately for many players, this can be a vicious circle and athletes who lack self-confidence can find it hard becoming successful. Your level of self-confidence can dictate your behavior, body language, how you speak and what you say. We know that self-confidence is an important prerequisite for success in football, but how do you obtain and acquire an unwavering level of confidence? Here are 5 strategies to help you improve and stabilize your confidence on the pitch:
- Focus all of your effort on addressing your weaknesses. Put in the extra effort and time during off days or after practices. Do whatever it takes. Fixing your weaknesses can have a huge impact on your game. Fixing just one nagging issue will make you more confident and effective.
- Use mistakes or mishaps as an opportunity to improve your game instead of being self-critical of your performance. When you are overly self-critical of your performance, you cripple your own confidence.
- Always look for opportunities to turn around your performance in a game when you’re not feeling fully confident. Just one goal or great play can spark your game and give you the opening to harness momentum.
- Don’t focus on what is in the past that you cannot change. Refocus as fast as you can on the next play, practice, or game. Focus on improving your performance in the future without being critical of your game.
- If all else fails, adrenaline is the quick secret to becoming confident on the field. When you feel nervous on the pitch, tell yourself “this is a good thing. I can use this to my advantage.” In my experience, every player feels nervous, but the best players turn this nervousness into adrenaline, not negativity.
